The original Lord Byron brand was launched in 1848 by Jose and Eusebio Alfonso, a pair of cousins who opened a small factory in Santiago de Las Vegas, a municipality of Havana, Cuba. The brand’s name pays tribute to the eponymous English poet and routine smoker, whose work has been hailed for centuries as some of Romantic literature’s best. The brand’s introduction was met with success, but, in the 1930s after the onset of the Great Depression, they were forced to close. In 1998, the great-great-great-grandson of one of the original founders, Nelson Alfonso, revived the brand as Byron Cigars, its current iteration. Part of the Century series, Lord Byron’s core line of cigars, the 21st Century is a medium-bodied cigar that boasts a complex flavor profile and an elegant presentation. Blend-wise, the 21st Century features an Ecuadorian Shadegrown wrapper over an undisclosed binder and a filler combination of Dominican and undisclosed tobacco.

As the name implies, these are Byron 21st Century Aristocratas that have undergone a decade of aging under Alfonso’s proprietary method of fluctuating humidity levels that mirrors the careful refinement of vintage wines and spirits. The humidors used to age the cigars use a minimum of five varietals of cedar from ceiling to floor, with the process allowing the cigars to age slowly and develop a refined flavor, balance and aroma.
“For me, aging cigars is like raising a child, you must give attention every day,” said Alfonso in a press release. “Ten years is not easy. But the cigar now is art. It is soft, but strong. Elegant, but full. This is my passion.”
The Byron 21st Century Aristocratas is a substantial cigar measuring 8 x 52 and using a blend of an Ecuadorian Connecticut-seed wrapper, a Peruvian binder and fillers from Peru and Nicaragua. The regular release version of the cigars get four years of aging.
